Do South Africans need a visa for Bulgaria?

Yes — and it’s recent: Bulgaria fully joined the Schengen area in 2025, so South Africans now need a Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa, valid across all Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180. As elsewhere in Schengen, ETIAS does not apply to you (it’s for visa-exempt nationalities), so the full Schengen visa is required, with mandatory travel insurance (all Schengen countries, min €30,000) — compare cover here. Apply through Bulgaria’s visa centre with bookings, bank statements and an itinerary, a few weeks ahead; the EES biometric checks now apply at the border. Full step-by-step in our Schengen visa walkthrough for South Africans.

What it costs (in rand)

Bulgaria is one of the EU’s best-value countries — budget around R650–1,100 a day. It still uses the lev (not the euro yet), and prices are friendly: hearty food (banitsa, kavarma, shopska salad), good cheap wine, and inexpensive transport. The Black Sea resorts in peak summer and central Sofia are the priciest pockets; everywhere else is gentle on the rand.

When to go

May–June and September are ideal for the cities, Rila mountains and sightseeing — warm but not crowded. July–August is Black Sea beach season (busy and pricier on the coast). December–March is ski season in the Bansko and Borovets resorts, which are cheap by European standards. Spring and early autumn are the sweet spots overall.

Getting around

Trains and intercity buses link the main centres affordably (buses are often quicker than trains). Sofia has a cheap metro; the historic centres are walkable. A hire car helps for the Rila and Pirin mountains and the monasteries. It connects easily by road to Romania, Greece, Serbia and North Macedonia for a wider Balkans trip.

What to actually do

Explore Sofia (Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Roman ruins) and the romantic old town of Plovdiv, one of Europe’s oldest cities. Visit the spectacular Rila Monastery in the mountains, hike the Rila and Pirin ranges (Seven Rila Lakes), and hit the Black Sea coast — lively Sunny Beach or the prettier old towns of Sozopol and Nessebar (UNESCO). Great history, mountains and beaches for the price. Pre-book popular monastery and city tours in summer.

Honest take

Bulgaria is one of Europe’s most underrated, best-value trips — beaches, mountains, monasteries and Roman history — with the (new, since 2025) Schengen visa the only barrier for South Africans. Read the Schengen guide, and land with a data eSIM.
