Do South Africans need a visa for the Central African Republic?

Yes. South Africans need a visa arranged in advance. The Central African Republic is a yellow-fever-risk country, so you’ll need a yellow fever vaccination certificate — South Africa asks for it when you come home.

What the official advice covers

As we checked it on 19 September 2026, the UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to the whole of the Central African Republic, except the capital Bangui, including Bangui M’Poko International Airport. For Bangui, it advises against all but essential travel. Read the current advice before you decide.

What it costs (in rand)

Budget around R900–1,600 a day. Bangui’s hotels are priced for the aid and UN market, and there’s little budget infrastructure. The currency is the Central African CFA franc, pegged to the euro; bring euros in cash.

When to go

The drier months, roughly December to March, are the usual window. Rains make roads difficult for much of the rest of the year.

Getting around

International connections to Bangui are limited — compare flights. Road travel outside the capital is slow and, under the current advice, in the all-travel zone. A data eSIM works in Bangui.

What it’s known for

Dzanga-Sangha, part of the UNESCO-listed Sangha Trinational forest, is one of the best places in Africa to see western lowland gorillas and forest elephants gathering at the Dzanga Bai clearing, and to meet the BaAka people of the forest. It’s outside Bangui, so under the all-travel warning as of September 2026.

Honest take

The Central African Republic holds one of the continent’s great rainforest wildlife experiences, but the only area not under the FCDO’s strongest warning is the capital itself. For South Africans, the paperwork is an advance visa and a yellow fever certificate. Read the current advice and decide for yourself.
