Do South Africans need a visa for Fiji?

No — South Africans get a visa-free visitor permit on arrival, valid up to 4 months, one of the most generous allowances going. Bring a passport valid six-plus months, an onward ticket and proof of funds/accommodation. The catch is purely getting there: it’s a long haul with no direct flight, usually routed via Australia or via Asia/the Middle East. You arrive at Nadi on the main island (Viti Levu). On the main islands, local buses and carriers are cheap. Most trips are “pick an island or two and stay put” rather than constant moving.

What to actually do

It’s beaches, reefs and warmth. Island-hop the Mamanucas and Yasawas for postcard beaches and snorkelling, dive Fiji’s famous soft coral reefs (and, for the brave, shark dives off Pacific Harbour/Beqa), and experience the genuinely warm Fijian “bula” culture — a village visit and a kava ceremony. The main island adds waterfalls, the Sigatoka dunes and highland villages. Compare the long-haul flights and lock in a place to stay early, as island accommodation fills up.
