SA school holidays (especially December and Easter) are the busiest and priciest stretches, so book early or travel in the shoulder months.

Getting around

Hiring a car is the best way to see the island — it’s small, and a car frees you from resort prices and lets you reach the quieter south and the interior. Drive on the left (same as home), which makes it familiar for South Africans. Public buses are cheap and characterful but slow, and ride-hailing isn’t as established as elsewhere, so taxis are negotiated. Distances are short: you can cross the island in a couple of hours.

What to actually do

Base yourself by a beach — Flic en Flac and Trou aux Biches in the west, Belle Mare in the east — and then get off the sand. Hike or take in the views at Le Morne, the UNESCO-listed peninsula. Go inland to the Black River Gorges for forest walks and the seven-coloured earths at Chamarel. Snorkel or dive the lagoons, take a catamaran to Île aux Cerfs, and spend a morning in the markets and street food of Port Louis. It’s small, but there’s more here than the resort brochure suggests.
