Do South Africans need a visa for Namibia?

No — South Africans enter visa-free for up to 90 days as SADC nationals. You may have seen headlines about Namibia tightening its visa rules: those changes, from 1 April 2025, ended visa-free entry for many Western countries (EU, UK, US, Australia and others) and introduced a paid visa on arrival for them. South Africans are not affected and keep visa-free access. Bring a passport valid six-plus months.

As with Botswana, the paperwork that matters for South Africans is the car, not the visa — if you’re driving, carry the registration, a cross-border/police letter if the vehicle is financed, a ZA sticker, and third-party insurance.

What it costs (in rand)

Namibia is reasonably priced for South Africans — budget around R450–700 a day for comfortable self-drive travel, similar to home. Camping and self-catering keep it low; lodges and guided activities push it up. The real budget lines are fuel (the distances are enormous and fuel stops are sparse), park entry fees, and accommodation. It’s one of the better-value adventures in the region if you’re set up to drive and camp.

When to go

The dry season (May–October) is best for wildlife (animals gather at Etosha’s waterholes) and for comfortable desert travel, with cool nights. Summer (November–April) is hot, with the chance of dramatic thunderstorms and the brief, beautiful greening of the desert; it’s low season with better rates. The coast (Swakopmund) stays cool and often foggy year-round.

Getting around

Namibia is made for self-driving — quiet roads, epic scenery, and a network of well-graded gravel routes. Distances are long, so plan fuel and water carefully and don’t rush the gravel (tyre damage is the classic mishap). Fly-in options exist for the remote north-west and private reserves. There’s little public transport for tourists, so a vehicle is effectively essential. Confirm your travel insurance covers self-drive and remote areas.

What to actually do

The icons: the towering red dunes of Sossusvlei and the ghostly trees of Deadvlei at sunrise; the wildlife of Etosha National Park; and the adventure-and-seafood town of Swakopmund on the Atlantic. Add the desolate Skeleton Coast, the ancient rock art and desert elephants of Damaraland, and the canyon country of the south (Fish River Canyon). It’s a landscape-photographer’s dream and one of Africa’s safest, easiest self-drives. Book a place to stay ahead, as lodges and popular campsites sell out in season.

Honest take

Namibia is arguably the best-value bucket-list trip a South African can do — visa-free, drivable, safe, and unlike anywhere else on earth. Ignore the visa-change noise (it’s not about you), budget mostly for fuel and park fees, and carry a regional data eSIM for the towns (the desert stretches have no signal at all).
