Do South Africans need a visa for North Macedonia?

Normally yes — but, as the callout notes, a valid multiple-entry Schengen (type C) visa lets South Africans enter for up to 15 days per visit. That’s the easiest route, especially if you’re already travelling in Schengen Europe. Without a Schengen visa, you apply for a North Macedonian visa through its mission before travel.

What it costs (in rand)

North Macedonia is one of Europe’s cheapest countries — budget around R350–500 a day. Tavern meals, excellent and inexpensive local wine, and family-run guesthouses (especially around Lake Ohrid) cost very little, and transport is cheap. It’s superb value, well below Western-European prices.

When to go

Late spring (May–June) and September are ideal — warm, good for the lake and hiking, and quieter than the July–August peak when Lake Ohrid is busiest. Winters are cold (with skiing in the mountains). The shoulder seasons give you the lake and old towns at their best.

Getting around

Buses are the main intercity transport — cheap and reasonable between Skopje, Ohrid and Bitola. A hire car helps for the mountains, wine country and Matka Canyon. Skopje is walkable; Ohrid’s old town is best on foot. It connects easily by road to Kosovo, Albania, Serbia and Greece for a wider Balkans trip.

What to actually do

The jewel is Lake Ohrid — a deep, ancient lake with a gorgeous UNESCO-listed old town, lakeside churches and beaches. The capital, Skopje, is famously eccentric, crammed with grandiose statues and monuments. Add the dramatic Matka Canyon near Skopje (kayaking and caves), good hiking in the national parks, and the Tikveš wine region. Cheap, scenic and uncrowded. Pre-book any guided tours, and your Ohrid accommodation early for summer.

North Macedonia is a cheap, beautiful, under-the-radar Balkan gem — and for South Africans the visa is often a non-issue if you hold a Schengen visa (hence the flag). Check whether you qualify, pair it with Albania or Kosovo, and land with a data eSIM.
