Do South Africans need a visa for Russia?

No visa is needed. South Africans can enter Russia visa-free for up to 90 days, under a bilateral agreement. Very few Western passports can say the same, so on paper Russia looks easy. The travel advisory is the real consideration.

What the travel advisory says

The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to Russia because of risks linked to its continuing invasion of Ukraine. These include drone attacks and air-defence activity, a lack of flights out, and limited ability to provide support. It also warns of an increased risk of detention, including for activities the authorities consider hostile, even if those activities took place outside Russia.

This is the advice as we checked it on 19 September 2026. It can change overnight, so read the current FCDO advice before making any decision. We use the UK Foreign Office as our benchmark because its advice is detailed, broken down by region and regularly updated. The US State Department and Australia’s Smartraveller are worth checking too.

If you have to travel

If you do go, know that foreign-issued Visa and Mastercard cards don’t work in Russia, so plan on carrying enough cash for the whole trip. Direct flights are limited, and most routes connect through Istanbul or a Gulf hub. Travel insurance that covers Russia is hard to find while the warning is in place.

Check that your travel insurance explicitly covers Russia. Most standard policies exclude destinations under these warnings, and travelling against official advice can void your cover. Tell someone at home your plans, and find the nearest South African mission before you go — DIRCO lists them.

Why this page exists

South Africans search for the entry rules for Russia, and they deserve an honest answer, so we cover them here. This isn’t a travel guide, though, and Russia isn’t in our where-to-go filter because the official advice is against travel. If that changes, we’ll build it out into a full guide.
