Do South Africans need a visa for the Seychelles?

No visa — but don’t skip the required step. Every visitor, South Africans included, gets visa-free entry (a free Visitor Permit issued on arrival, valid up to three months). However, you must obtain the Seychelles Travel Authorisation — the country’s Electronic Border System — online before you depart. It’s not a visa, but you won’t be allowed to board without it.

It costs about €10 for standard processing (within 24 hours), with faster options at higher fees. Apply a few days ahead, with a passport valid six-plus months, an onward ticket and proof of accommodation.

Seychelles has a luxury reputation, and the resorts earn it — but, like the Maldives, there’s a quieter budget route. Private-island resorts run R3,000+ a day, while self-catering guesthouses on the main islands plus the cheap public ferries and buses can bring it down considerably; budget R1,500–3,000 depending on how you travel, before flights. Eating at local takeaways and markets rather than hotel restaurants is the biggest saving. The granitic islands (Mahé, Praslin, La Digue) are where the affordable options are.

When to go

Seychelles is warm year-round, with two wind seasons. April–May and October–November are the calm, transitional sweet spots — good for diving and flat seas. The southeast trade winds (May–September) bring cooler, breezier, drier weather (good for walking, choppier for some beaches); the northwest winds (November–March) are hotter and wetter. There’s no truly bad time, just trade-offs.

Getting around

Inter-island travel is by ferry (the Cat Cocos between Mahé and Praslin, and the short hop to La Digue) or short domestic flights to the outer islands. On Mahé and Praslin, cheap public buses and car hire get you around; on tiny La Digue, you cycle — it’s part of the charm. Most people base on one or two islands and ferry between them rather than constantly moving.

What to actually do

It’s beaches and nature. La Digue’s Anse Source d’Argent — granite boulders and turquoise water — is one of the most photographed beaches on earth, and you reach it by bicycle. Snorkel and dive the reefs, walk the Vallée de Mai on Praslin (home of the giant coco de mer palm), and hop the powder-sand coves of Mahé. It’s a slow, scenic destination built for switching off. Lock in a place to stay early (the good guesthouses book out) and compare flights, which are the other big cost.

Honest take

Seychelles is genuinely reachable for South Africans beyond the honeymoon-resort cliché — the guesthouse-and-ferry route is the secret.
