Do South Africans need a visa for St Vincent and the Grenadines?
No — South Africans enter visa-free for up to 3 months, with no application or fee. Bring a passport valid six-plus months, an onward ticket and proof of where you’re staying.
Getting there got much easier once Argyle International Airport opened: there are now direct flights from London, so an SA passport holder can reach the country without transiting the United States (where you’d need a US visa just to change planes). Barbados and St Lucia are the other usual connections. The visa-free countries guide lists the other islands you can reach this easily.
What it costs (in rand)
This is a country of two budgets. The main island of St Vincent and the laid-back island of Bequia are reasonable by Caribbean standards — budget R900–1,600 a day — with guesthouses, apartments and local eateries. The private-island end of the Grenadines — Mustique, Petit St Vincent, Palm Island — is an entirely different, very expensive world. Everything uses the East Caribbean dollar, pegged to the US dollar. Savers: eat local (fresh fish, roti, callaloo), use the cheap ferries and minibuses, and base yourself on Bequia rather than the resort islands.
When to go
January to May is the dry season and the best time — warm, sunny and good sailing conditions. June to November is wetter and is the Atlantic hurricane season, cheaper but with real storm risk peaking around August–October. Vincy Mas, the carnival, peaks around late June to early July. Note that La Soufrière volcano on St Vincent erupted as recently as 2021; it’s monitored closely, and the hiking trail reopens when it’s safe — check locally.
Getting around
On St Vincent, minibuses are cheap and frequent and taxis are easy to find (agree the fare first); a hire car helps for the leeward and windward coasts, and they drive on the left, which suits South Africans. The Grenadines are all about the water: regular ferries run from Kingstown to Bequia, and onward boats and small flights reach Canouan, Mayreau and Union Island. Chartering a yacht — crewed or bareboat — is how many people see the chain, and it’s the classic way to reach the Tobago Cays.
What to actually do
Start with the sailing-and-snorkelling heart of the country: the Tobago Cays, a protected marine park of tiny islands where you snorkel with turtles in a turquoise lagoon. Base yourself on Bequia, a genuinely charming boat-building island with good beaches (Princess Margaret Beach) and a friendly harbour town. On St Vincent, hike the La Soufrière volcano when it’s open, visit the botanical gardens in Kingstown (among the oldest in the hemisphere) and the black-sand beaches of the windward side. Island-hop south to Union Island for kitesurfing. Compare flights via London and book accommodation on Bequia early in peak season.
Honest take
St Vincent and the Grenadines is the Caribbean for people who want to be on the water, not just beside it — and for South Africans it’s visa-free with a London routing that dodges the US-visa problem. The trick is to skip the celebrity islands and base yourself on Bequia, where the money goes much further and the sailing is on your doorstep. Go in the dry season, get to the Tobago Cays, and land with a data eSIM for ferry timetables.
