Do South Africans need a visa for Syria?

Reference sources list an e-visa for South Africans, but Syria’s entry rules have been in flux since the change of government in December 2024, and even specialist services currently report the requirements as unknown. Don’t rely on an old guide or a third-party site — confirm directly before making any plans.

What the travel advisory says

The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to Syria, citing unpredictable security conditions and the threat of terrorist attacks. The situation has changed quickly since 2024 and can change again at short notice.

This is the advice as we checked it on 19 September 2026. It can change overnight, so read the current FCDO advice before making any decision. We use the UK Foreign Office as our benchmark because its advice is detailed, broken down by region and regularly updated. The US State Department and Australia’s Smartraveller are worth checking too.

If you have to travel

Any travel should be for an essential reason and planned with current, on-the-ground security advice. Overland entry routes and the rules at each border can differ and change without notice.

Check that your travel insurance explicitly covers Syria. Most standard policies exclude destinations under these warnings, and travelling against official advice can void your cover. Tell someone at home your plans, and find the nearest South African mission before you go — DIRCO lists them.
