Do South Africans need a visa for Tanzania?

No — South African passport holders enter Tanzania visa-free for tourism for up to 90 days, and that covers Zanzibar too (it’s part of Tanzania, not a separate country for entry purposes). Business travel is the exception and does need a visa. Bring a passport valid six-plus months and proof of onward travel.

One important Zanzibar-specific catch: the islands introduced a mandatory inbound travel-insurance requirement for visitors. The exact rule and fee have shifted since it launched, so confirm the current requirement and cost before you fly, and factor it into your budget — don’t get caught out at the airport.

What it costs (in rand)

Day-to-day travel runs roughly R400–700, similar to home and very reasonable on Zanzibar outside the top resorts. But the budget headline in Tanzania is safari, which is in its own league: northern-circuit park fees, a 4x4 and guide, and lodge or camp rates add up fast, so treat safari days as deliberate splurges. Zanzibar lets you balance the books — guesthouses in Stone Town and the beach villages are affordable, seafood is cheap, and you can do a lot on very little between dives and dhow trips.

When to go

June to October is the classic window: dry, prime for safari, and reliable beach weather on the coast. The Serengeti’s Great Migration is a moving target across the year — river crossings tend to fall around July–September, calving around January–February in the south — so time your trip to the stretch you most want to see. Zanzibar is good much of the year, with the long rains (around March–May) the main time to avoid.

Getting around

Distances are big. Cheap domestic flights link Kilimanjaro/Arusha (for the northern safari circuit), Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar — worth it to save long drives. Safari itself is by 4x4 with a guide, usually as a package. Zanzibar is small: taxis and dala-dalas (shared minibuses) get you around, and most people pre-arrange a transfer from the airport or port. For the safari and any water sports, make sure your travel insurance covers the activities (and remember Zanzibar’s own insurance rule).

What to actually do

Two trips in one. On the mainland: the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, and quieter Tarangire and Ruaha for big-game safari; or climb Kilimanjaro if that’s your goal. Then fly to Zanzibar to decompress — the spice-trade lanes and history of Stone Town, dhow sunset cruises, world-class diving and snorkelling off the reefs, and the postcard beaches of the north and east coasts. The safari-then-beach combo is the reason this is such a popular trip.
