Do South Africans need a visa for Ukraine?

Yes — South Africans need a visa, available as an e-visa for up to 30 days. Getting there adds a second layer. Ukraine’s airspace has been closed to commercial flights since the full-scale invasion, so entry is overland, and the usual routes run through Poland, Slovakia, Hungary or Romania — all Schengen countries. So a South African also needs a Schengen visa just to reach the border; see our Schengen visa walkthrough.

What the official advice covers

As we checked it on 19 September 2026, the UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to most of Ukraine, including Kyiv, Odesa and Crimea, and within 50km of the border with Belarus. For the western regions — Lviv, Zakarpattia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil and Chernivtsi, plus parts of Volyn, Rivne and Zhytomyr more than 50km from Belarus — it advises against all but essential travel. Missile and drone attacks happen across the country, including in the west. Read the current advice before you decide.

What it costs (in rand)

Western Ukraine is good value — budget around R450–750 a day. The hryvnia is the currency, and Ukraine is very card-friendly — contactless works almost everywhere. Lviv’s coffee houses, restaurants and hotels cost well under their Polish equivalents. Budget separately for the Schengen visa and your flight to Poland.

When to go

May to September is warm and green, with long days. Winter is cold, and attacks on energy infrastructure have caused power cuts, so expect disruption and bring a power bank.

Getting around

The usual route in is to fly to Kraków or Rzeszów in Poland — compare flights — then take a train or bus across the border to Lviv. Ukraine’s railway is reliable and extensive. Martial law is in force, with night-time curfews in many cities. Download Ukraine’s air-raid alert app and know where your nearest shelter is. A data eSIM keeps you connected for alerts.

What it’s known for

Lviv’s beautiful old town (UNESCO), coffee-house culture and churches, and the Carpathian mountains of Zakarpattia and Ivano-Frankivsk for hiking in summer — all under the all-but-essential warning as of September 2026. Kyiv’s Saint Sophia Cathedral and Pechersk Lavra (UNESCO) and the port of Odesa are in the all-travel zone.

Honest take

For a South African, Ukraine is two visas deep — a Ukrainian e-visa and a Schengen visa to reach it — and a war-time trip, with the whole west under an all-but-essential warning and the rest under the strongest one. Lviv itself is lovely and functioning, and many people do visit for work, family and solidarity. Read the current advice, plan the paperwork early, and decide for yourself.
