Do South Africans need a visa for the UK?

Yes — South Africans are “visa nationals” and need a UK Standard Visitor visa, sorted online before you travel. The crucial clarification: you cannot use the UK ETA. The ETA (around £20) is only for nationalities that are visa-exempt; South Africa isn’t one, so an SA passport needs the full Standard Visitor visa (around £127) for stays up to six months.

The process: apply online, pay, and book an appointment to give biometrics (fingerprints and a photo) at a visa application centre. Standard processing is often about three weeks, with priority options for an extra fee. Wales adds castles and coast; the north gives you Liverpool, Manchester and the Yorkshire Dales. Trains make a multi-city loop easy. Many South Africans also use the UK as a base to hop into Europe.
