Do South Africans need a visa for the USA?

Yes — and this is the single most important thing to get right: South Africa is not in the US Visa Waiver Program, so you cannot use ESTA. Ignore anyone who tells you to “just fill in an ESTA” — that’s only for visa-waiver passports. South Africans need a proper B1/B2 visitor visa.

The process: complete the online DS-160 form, pay the fee, and attend an in-person interview at the US embassy in Pretoria or the consulate in Cape Town/Johannesburg (required for ages 14–79). The application fee is around US$185, and a new visa integrity fee (about US$250) is being introduced — confirm the current total when you apply, as the charges are changing. Approved B1/B2 visas are often issued for up to 10 years, multiple entry.

When to go

Getting around

Distances are huge — for anything cross-country you’ll fly (a competitive domestic market keeps fares reasonable if booked ahead). Pick a theme rather than the whole country. The classic firsts: New York, Las Vegas and a Southwest national-parks road trip (Grand Canyon, Zion, Monument Valley); or California (LA, San Francisco, Yosemite, the Pacific Coast Highway). Add Florida’s beaches and theme parks, the music-and-history trail of the South, or the wild north-west. It’s many trips in one — don’t try to do them all at once.
