Do South Africans need a visa for Venezuela?
No — South Africans can enter visa-free for up to 90 days. Venezuela is a yellow-fever-risk country, so you’ll need a yellow fever vaccination certificate — South Africa asks for it when you come home.
What the official advice covers
As we checked it on 19 September 2026, the UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to land within 80km of the Colombian border and 40km of the Brazilian and Guyanese borders, the Orinoco Mining Arc in Bolívar state, the part of Delta Amacuro south of the Orinoco, and Zulia state. It advises against all but essential travel to the rest of Venezuela. No part of the country is free of a warning.
There’s also a recent disaster: two major earthquakes on 24 June 2026 (magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5) caused significant damage in La Guaira and parts of Caracas. Maiquetía airport resumed commercial flights on 1 September with limited capacity. Read the current advice before you decide.
What it costs (in rand)
Budget around R450–800 a day. Venezuela is effectively dollarised — bring US dollars in cash, in small notes, as cards and the bolívar are unreliable for visitors. Prices can shift quickly. Guided trips to Canaima or Los Roques are the main costs.
When to go
The dry season, December to April, is best for the coast and Los Roques. For Angel Falls, the wet season (roughly June to November) is when the falls are at full flow — in the dry months they can thin to a trickle.
Getting around
International flights are limited; Caracas (Maiquetía), Valencia, Barquisimeto and Barcelona airports are operating, according to the FCDO — compare flights and confirm they’re running. Canaima and Los Roques are reached by small planes, usually as part of a package. Avoid travelling by road at night, and use pre-arranged transport. A data eSIM helps with bookings.
What it’s known for
Angel Falls, the world’s highest waterfall, in Canaima National Park — Canaima is in Bolívar, where parts of the state are under the all-travel warning, so check the FCDO map for your route. Mount Roraima, the flat-topped tepui on the tri-border with Brazil and Guyana, is inside the all-travel border zone. The Los Roques coral archipelago and the Andes around Mérida fall under the all-but-essential warning.
Honest take
On paper, Venezuela is one of the easiest countries in South America for a South African — 90 days visa-free — and its landscapes are spectacular. The complications are real: warnings across the whole country, a dollar-cash economy, crime, and June’s earthquakes, with flights still limited. Read the current advice, confirm flights first, and decide for yourself.
