Is Vietnam visa-free for South Africans?

No — but it’s about as painless as a visa gets. South African passport holders need one, and the one to get is the government e-visa: you apply online, with no embassy visit and no agent. It’s valid for up to 90 days and comes in single- or multiple-entry.

Apply at the official portal — or check the requirements and apply online if you’d rather have it walked through for you. Single entry costs roughly US$25, and approval usually lands within about three working days. Print the PDF approval and carry it: you’ll show it at airline check-in and again at immigration.

A few honest notes. Apply at least a week before you fly, use a passport with six-plus months of validity, and make sure the entry and exit points you put on the form match your actual flights.

What it costs (in rand)

Vietnam is one of the cheapest trips a South African can take. Budget roughly R280–420 a day for comfortable budget-to-midrange travel. At the lower end you’re in clean guesthouses and eating where locals eat; the upper end buys private rooms, the odd domestic flight and a cooking class or two.

Where the money goes: a dorm bed or basic guesthouse room is cheap, a bowl of phở or a bánh mì costs next to nothing, and a fresh draft beer (bia hơi) is famously one of the cheapest drinks on earth. The big variable is how much you fly versus take overnight trains and buses, and how many paid tours you add.

When to go

Vietnam is long and thin, so there’s no single “best” month — the weather splits by region. Roughly: the north (Hanoi, Sapa, Ha Long) is best in autumn and spring; the centre (Hoi An, Da Nang, Hue) is driest from roughly February to August; the south (Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong) is warm year-round with a wet season around May to October. If you’re doing the full north-to-south run, aim for the shoulder months and accept that you’ll meet some rain somewhere.

Getting around

Distances are big but transport is cheap and easy. Overnight sleeper trains and buses connect the main cities and save you a night’s accommodation. Domestic flights are inexpensive if you book a little ahead — handy for skipping the long Hanoi–Ho Chi Minh haul. In cities, the Grab app (ride-hailing for cars and motorbikes) takes the haggling out of getting around. Renting a motorbike is a rite of passage, but ride within your ability and wear a helmet — and check your travel insurance actually covers riding before you do.

What to actually do

Start in Hanoi’s chaotic, brilliant Old Quarter, then cruise the limestone karsts of Ha Long or quieter Lan Ha Bay. Head to the mountains around Sapa for rice-terrace treks. In the centre, Hoi An’s lantern-lit old town is the postcard everyone comes for, with tailors and beaches a bike ride away. Down south, Ho Chi Minh City is fast and modern, with the Mekong Delta and the Cu Chi tunnels within day-trip reach. Beach time? Da Nang and Phu Quoc.

Honest take

For value, food and sheer variety, Vietnam is hard to beat on a South African budget — a long trip here costs less than a short one almost anywhere in Europe. The only real friction is the distance and the e-visa admin, both of which are easily managed. Land with a data eSIM already loaded and you’ll be ordering noodles and booking trains within the hour.
